Abstract

Man is exposed to ionizing radiation with or without his consent. The radiation can cause injuries and clinical symptoms which may include a chromosomal transformation, cancer induction, free radical formation, bone necroses and radiation catratogenesis. The present study aimed to investigate the levels of background radiation at the selected three hospital facilities in Ogbomoso. Measurements were taken at different location within the hospital premises in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, BOWEN Teaching Hospital and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Health Center. The mean effective dose rates in the three hospitals were 0.189 µSvhr-1, 1.154 µSvhr-1 and 2.508 µSvhr-1 respectively. The mean annual effective dose rates in the three hospitals were 1.277 µSvyr-1, 5.918 µSvyr-1 and 6.873 µSvyr-1 respectively. The mean annual effective dose rate estimated for the three hospitals were found to lie below the recommended value of 1.0 mSvyr-1. Thus, may not pose any adverse health effect to the workers and the public.
