ANTIMICROBIAL EFFECTS OF NEEM (AZADIRACHTA INDICA) LEAF EXTRACT ON SOME CLINICAL MICROORGANISMS
Abstract
Neem, Azadarichta indica is a tree of the mahogany family Meliacea. It has been found to possess many medicinal functions. Man uses the leaves, bark of the stem as well as the roots treating different ailments. This work was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effects of the neem leaves on some clinical micro-organisms. Fresh leaves of the plant were collected, mashed to pulp and soaked in 90% ethanol and then distilled water to obtain the ethanolic and aqueous extracts. Different concentrations of the extracts were applied on some clinical micro-organisms including Staphylococcus sp, E.coli and Candida sp. The results showed that the ethanolic extract exhibited different zones of inhibition on the test micro-organisms depending on their concentrations; while the aqueous extract showed no effects on them. The result of the works has the implication of using extracts of the neem leaves for treating bacterial diseases.
