Abstract

Abstract This study examined the perception of primary school teachers in Kano Municipal regarding the relevance of the play-way method of teaching in primary education. The study was motivated by the increasing need for learner-centered instructional strategies that promote active participation, creativity, critical thinking, and improved academic performance among pupils. The play-way method, which emphasizes learning through play and practical activities, has been widely recognized as an effective approach in early childhood and primary education. However, its level of acceptance and utilization among teachers in Kano Municipal required empirical investigation. The objectives of the study were to determine teachers’ level of awareness of the play-way method, assess their perception of its relevance in teaching and learning, identify the benefits associated with its use, and examine the challenges affecting its implementation in primary schools. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of primary school teachers in Kano Municipal, while a structured questionnaire was used as the major instrument for data collection. Data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that the majority of teachers had positive perceptions toward the play-way method and considered it relevant in enhancing pupils’ understanding, participation, communication skills, creativity, and academic achievement. The study further revealed that the method makes learning more interesting, promotes social interaction among pupils, and improves retention of knowledge. Despite these benefits, challenges such as inadequate instructional materials, overcrowded classrooms, limited teacher training, insufficient time allocation, and lack of administrative support hindered the effective implementation of the method in schools. Based on the findings, the study concluded that the play-way method is an effective and relevant teaching approach for primary school education in Kano Municipal. The study recommended that educational authorities, school administrators, and teachers should encourage the adoption of play-based instructional strategies through regular training, provision of adequate teaching materials, and supportive learning environments to enhance effective teaching and learning outcomes in primary schools.
