Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the impact of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in Mathematics in senior secondary schools in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The primary objective was to determine the extent to which the use of instructional materials—such as charts, models, mathematical instruments, and digital tools—affects students’ understanding and performance in Mathematics. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of senior secondary school students and Mathematics teachers in selected schools within the area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings revealed that the use of appropriate and well-designed instructional materials significantly enhances students’ comprehension, motivation, and academic performance in Mathematics. The study further indicated that inadequate availability of materials, insufficient teacher training, and poor maintenance practices limit the effective use of such materials. Based on the findings, it was recommended that school administrators and education stakeholders should provide sufficient instructional resources, train teachers on their effective utilization, and integrate technology-based tools to enrich Mathematics instruction. The study concludes that instructional materials play a vital role in improving students’ performance in Mathematics and should be prioritized in teaching and learning processes at the senior secondary school level.
