Abstract

This study explores the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent. The aim was to develop an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to chemical synthesis methods that often involve toxic reagents. Turmeric, rich in curcuminoids such as curcumin and demethoxycurcumin, was used to reduce ferric chloride solution, indicated by a color change from yellow to dark brown. The synthesized material was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). FTIR confirmed the presence of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups responsible for reduction and stabilization, while SEM revealed predominantly sheet-like structures rather than discrete nanoparticles, suggesting the need for synthesis optimization. Phytochemical analysis showed active compounds like phenols and flavonoids participated in the process. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated effective inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus (15.5 mm) and Escherichia coli (13.0 mm), indicating significant bioactivity. The study concludes that turmeric extract can serve as a viable and environmentally friendly agent for iron nanoparticle synthesis, with potential applications in antimicrobial and environmental fields.
