Abstract

Abstract The present research was carried out to determine the antimicrobial efficacy of two medicated soaps (Dettol and Tura) Results obtained from the experiment revealed that most of the studied antiseptic soaps had antimicrobial properties, though to a varying degree. Except at the lower concentration in Dettol soap which showed no activity. Tura Soap emerged as the most effective medicated soap, based on the diameter of the zone of inhibition ranged from 14mm to 22mm diameter for S. aureus but for the lowest concentration the Tura soap showed no activity sample 1, 2, 4, 5 and 9 isolates. Dettol soap showed no activity in the lower concentration 0.25g/ml in the experiment carried out. This observation is different from studies by Varsha, 2016 where there was activity detected for soap with similar active ingredient of soap A against the test organism (S. aureus). The biochemical analysis and colony description for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus was shown in Table 2. Catalase, coagulase and gram staining tests were positive for the test organism while oxidase tests were negative for both sample Dettol and Tura. Table 3 shows the MIC and MBC values (mg/ml) of the medicated (Tura) soaps on the test organisms. The result of the minimum inhibitory showed that. Medicated soap (Tura) has MIC of 0.125 mg/ml and MBC of 0.125 mg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus.
