Abstract

‎ABSTRACT ‎Language is a dynamic phenomenon, continuously evolving in response to sociocultural, historical, and technological developments within society. This study focuses on the semantic shifts in the Yoruba language over time, exploring how meanings of words and expressions have transformed across different eras. By investigating these changes, the research sheds light on the interplay between language, culture, and identity, while highlighting the importance of preserving linguistic heritage amidst modern influences. ‎ ‎The research adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining historical linguistic analysis, sociolinguistic theory, and ethnographic methods to investigate the factors driving semantic changes in Yoruba. These factors include colonial influence, cultural globalization, the introduction of new technologies, and shifts in social norms. The study examines semantic evolution through data collected from diverse sources, including archival documents, oral traditions, proverbs, literature, and contemporary Yoruba usage in media and everyday conversations. ‎ ‎Findings from the study reveal that semantic shifts in Yoruba are influenced both by universal linguistic principles and unique sociocultural dynamics. For instance, some words have acquired extended meanings due to technological advancements, while others have been repurposed to reflect societal changes, such as gender roles and political ideologies. Additionally, the interaction between Yoruba and other languages, particularly English, has played a significant role in shaping contemporary usage. ‎ ‎This research not only enhances understanding of how and why semantic shifts occur in Yoruba but also provides a framework for studying similar processes in other indigenous languages. It underscores the need for intentional efforts to document and promote linguistic diversity, especially in the face of global trends that threaten the survival of minority languages. The study concludes by recommending strategies for sustaining Yoruba language vitality, including educational initiatives, the use of technology for language preservation, and the promotion of culturally rooted media content. ‎ ‎Through this exploration, the study contributes to ongoing discussions on language evolution and its implications for cultural preservation in a rapidly changing world. ‎
