THE IMPACT OF THE COLONIAL ECONOMY ON THE SOCIETY OF KILBA DISTRICT OF ADAMAWA PROVINCE 1907-1960

ABSTRACT This research focuses on the impact of the colonial economy on the society of Kilba district in Adamawa Province from 1907 to 1960. The study investigates how colonial economic activities influenced the social, cultural, and economic life of the Kilba people during the colonial period. It examines changes in agriculture, trade, taxation, and traditional industries as a result of colonial policies and the introduction of new goods and technologies. Data was collected through oral interviews with elders, traders, and farmers, as well as from written documents, books, journals, and online sources. The findings reveal that colonialism brought both positive and negative effects. On one hand, it introduced new crops, improved trade routes, and modern goods such as shoes and farming tools, which helped to diversify the local economy. On the other hand, the use of chemical fertilizers damaged the soil, traditional industries declined, and colonial taxation systems burdened the local population. Additionally, colonial rule disrupted social structures and limited the Kilba people’s control over their land and resources.The study concludes that while colonialism contributed to economic development in some areas, it also created challenges that affected the Kilba society’s traditional way of life. Understanding these impacts is important for shaping better local economic policies and preserving the cultural heritage of the Kilba people today.
