Abstract

This research work was carried out to investigate the effects of teachers’ characteristics on students' performance in national values curriculum in upper basic schools in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State. The population of the study consisted of National Values teachers and students in secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area. One hundred (100) secondary school students and twenty (20) teachers were randomly selected and use for carrying out the research work. The research design adopted for the study is a descriptive survey design. A research instrument titled "the effects of teachers’ characteristics on students’ performance in national values curriculum in upper basic schools in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State" was used to gather data for statistical analysis which was done using simple percentages. Statistical analysis was done using frequency counts and simple percentages. Findings revealed that the academic qualification of teachers is a determinant of students' academic performance. Teachers’ academic qualification determines the teaching methodology and usage of teaching methods. Also, the study has revealed that the teaching experience of teachers is a determinant of their teaching efficiency. Teachers’ teaching experience arc able to cope with teaching difficulties. Teachers' teaching method influences students’ academic performance in National Value. It was therefore recommended that there is need for government to provide all the needed teaching aids and facilities for the effective teaching and learning of National Values in secondary schools in Nigeria and that there is need for government and private school owners to provide full equipped laboratories for the effective teaching and learning of National Values in secondary schools.
