Abstract

This study explores the impact of remote monitoring technologies on construction site safety, focusing on their effectiveness, cost-benefit implications, and barriers to adoption. The study aimed to evaluate how these technologies enhance hazard identification and risk mitigation while identifying key challenges to their implementation. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires from 71 respondents out of 80 within the Lagos State construction industry, achieving an 88.75% response rate. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed for data analysis to validate the relationships among cost-benefit, barriers, and safety outcomes. Findings revealed that 87.32% of respondents rated remote monitoring technologies, such as drones, wearable devices, and sensors. Furthermore, 83.10% reported frequent hazard mitigation before incidents, supporting the technologies' proactive safety capabilities. Despite these benefits, challenges such as high implementation costs (42.25%), lack of technical expertise (29.58%), and data privacy concerns (15.49%) were significant barriers. SEM analysis confirmed the reliability of the study constructs result, indicating strong alignment with theoretical expectations. The study concludes that remote monitoring technologies significantly improve safety outcomes but require cost-effective strategies, enhanced training, and robust data governance for widespread adoption. Recommendations include financial incentives, tailored training programs, and stakeholder engagement to foster acceptance and integration. This research contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence and practical strategies to enhance construction site safety through technology adoption, emphasizing its transformative potential despite existing barriers.
