A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MYOPIA AND INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE IN YOUTHS IN AGINDIGBI, IKEJA, LAGOS.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This was an observational study aimed at discovering the relationship between myopia and
intraocular pressure in youths in Agidingbi ikeja. This study sought to contribute valuable
insights into the potential risk factors associated with myopia-related eye diseases, ultimately
improving screening practices and advancing our understanding of the underlying mechanisms
of myopia and intraocular pressure. 100 patients were studied (200 eyes) and sample size
comprised of 52 males and 48 females between the ages of 15- 35 years with the mean age of
25.56 years. The myopic group consisted of 50 patients ( 26 males and 24 males) and the
emmetropic(control) group consisted of 50 patients. This research was carried out in Enny Eye
Care clinic, agidingbi ikeja and its surrounding environs. The intraocular pressure measurements
of each eye was taken using the air-puff non contact tonometer. The data was then classified into
4 groups- Emmetropia, low myopia, moderate myopia and high myopia. For the myopic group,
26 subjects (52%) had an intraocular pressure between 10 — 15 mmHg on the right eye while 24
(48%) had an intraocular pressure between 16 and 22 mmHg. The intraocular pressure for the
left eye shows 26 subjects (52%) had an intraocular pressure between 10 — 16 mmHg on the left
eye while 24 (48%) had an intraocular pressure between 17 and 23 mmHg. The right eye of the
emmetropic group showed that 39 patients (78%) had an intraocular pressure between 12 — 16
mmHg on the right eye while 11 (22%) had an intraocular pressure between 17 and 21 mmHg.
For the left eyes; 35 patients (70%) had an intraocular pressure between 11 — 16 mmHg on the
left eye while 15 (30%) had an intraocular pressure between 17 and 22 mmHg. Using Analysis
of Variance (ANOVA) test revealed that myopia had no significant effect on intraocular pressure
with p values of 0.479 and 0.229 for the right and left eyes respectively. there was no difference
between the intraocular pressure of myopic patients and emmetropic subjects with mean
intraocular pressure of myopes being 16.15mmhg+_3.06 and 16.51 +_3.2 and mean IOP of
Emmetropes being 15.04 +_2.6 and 15.21 +_ 2.50 with p values of 0.056 and 0.058 for both eyes
respectively. It also revealed that the degree of myopia had no effect on IOP with p values of
0.567 and 0.667 in both eyes respectively. Hence there was no significant relationship between
myopia and intraocular pressure.
