COVID 19 PANDENMIC AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON SOCIAL CHANGE A STUDY OF MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN AREA IN BORNO STATE

The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in late 2019, had far-reaching effects on societies worldwide, altering social, economic, and cultural interactions. This study examines the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on social change in Maiduguri Metropolitan Area, Borno State. The research explores how the pandemic influenced social relationships, livelihoods, education, religious activities, and community interactions. Using a descriptive research design, data were gathered from residents through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that COVID-19 significantly affected social behavior, including increased social distancing, reduced communal gatherings, shifts in family dynamics, and changes in economic activities. The study concludes that while the pandemic disrupted traditional social structures, it also led to the adoption of new forms of social interaction such as digital communication. The study recommends increased public awareness on health emergencies, improved social support systems, and government policies that can mitigate the negative social impacts of future pandemics.
