FACTORS AFFECTING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN UNGOGO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KANO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the factors affecting English language learning among senior secondary school students in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State. English proficiency is essential for academic success and career opportunities, yet many students struggle with learning the language due to various challenges. The study investigates the key factors influencing English language learning, including instructional methods, socio-cultural background, and learning environment. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to students from three selected secondary schools. The total population for this study was 3,244 students, and the sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size determination table. The findings reveal that inadequate qualified teachers, poor student motivation, and an unconducive learning environment significantly impact English language acquisition. Additionally, instructional methods such as demonstration, role play, storytelling, and flipped classroom techniques were found to enhance students' engagement and comprehension. Socio-cultural factors, including the influence of local dialects, language spoken at home, and code-switching, also play a significant role in shaping students' English language proficiency. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to improve English language learning. These include the provision of adequate teaching resources, teacher training programs, and curriculum modifications to enhance English instruction. The study highlights the need for educational stakeholders to address these challenges to improve students’ English proficiency.
