ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Abstract
In an increasingly globalized world, the need for a common medium of communication has elevated English to the status of a global lingua franca. This project explores the socio-cultural, economic, and political factors that have contributed to the widespread adoption of English as a bridge language among speakers of diverse mother tongues. It critically examines the dual impact of English—its role in facilitating international discourse and its influence on indigenous languages, particularly within the Nigerian context. While English offers pragmatic advantages in education, commerce, and diplomacy, its dominance poses challenges to linguistic diversity and cultural identity. The study highlights the importance of balanced language policies that promote both global engagement and the preservation of local languages. Recommendations include integrating indigenous languages into educational curricula, enhancing teacher training, and fostering community-based initiatives to sustain Nigeria’s rich linguistic heritage.
