Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the prospects and challenges of radio stations in promoting public health in rural communities, focusing on Offa, Kwara State. Radio serves as a crucial medium for disseminating health information, particularly in rural areas where access to other media is limited. The study assessed the effectiveness of radio programs in enhancing public health awareness and influencing health behaviors. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to residents of Offa. Findings revealed that radio plays a significant role in educating the public on health matters, with many respondents acknowledging that health programs influenced their health decisions and practices. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, weak collaboration with health organizations, technical limitations, and a lack of specialized training for broadcasters were identified as obstacles to effective health communication. To maximize the impact of radio in public health promotion, the study recommends improved funding, stronger partnerships with health professionals, increased focus on prevalent rural health issues, and the use of local languages to enhance audience comprehension. Addressing these challenges will enhance the effectiveness of radio in driving positive health outcomes in rural communities. Keywords: Radio stations, public health, rural communities, health communication, health awareness.
