Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of privatization and commercialization on Nigeria's economic development, focusing on the case of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in Kwara State. Since the adoption of energy sector reforms in 2005, Nigeria has aimed to improve electricity access, reliability, and affordability through privatization of its power sector. Despite significant efforts, empirical evidence reveals mixed outcomes, with some improvements in revenue collection and urban electrification, but persistent challenges in rural access, service reliability, and affordability. Guided by a comprehensive literature review and theoretical frameworks including Institutional, Dependency, Public Choice, and Modernization theories the research investigates both macro and micro-level effects of privatization. Employing a cross-sectional, quantitative methodology, data from 150 respondents will be analyzed to assess changes in performance, service delivery, and economic contribution post-privatization. The findings aim to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and academia on the efficacy of privatization policies and their implications for Nigeria's broader economic development, emphasizing the need for inclusive strategies that address rural electrification and affordability gaps.
