ASSESSING FACTORS MILITATING THE USE OF RADIATION MONITORING DOSIMETERS IN NORTHEAST NIGERIA'S TERTIARY HOSPITALS.
Abstract
Title: Assessing factors militating the use of radiation monitoring dosimeters in the northeast Nigeria's tertiary hospitals.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate and identify factors hindering the effective use of radiation monitoring dosimeters, providing insights to enhance radiation safety practices.
Material and Method: A prospective, cross-sectional study was used targeting radiographers in the northeast Nigeria's tertiary hospitals from May to November 2023. Using a 16-item scale question that sought information on assessing factors militating the use of radiation monitoring dosimeters in northeast Nigeria's tertiary hospitals. The data was analysed using statistical
package for social science (SPSS), descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage was calculated.
Result: A total of 100 responses was received, (meaning the study had a response of 84%). Findings from the study showed that 76 (76%) were Male while 24 (24%) were female with age range from 18 to 45 and above with mean age of 31 years. The study revealed a high awareness (98%) among radiographers regarding the existence of radiation monitoring dosimeters, yet identified challenges in effective utilization. Financial constraints, lack of specific policies, and technical difficulties were key barriers.
Conclusion: The findings underscore the necessity for heightened awareness, increased financial support, and comprehensive training programs to address the identified challenges and promote effective use of radiation monitoring devices in northeast Nigerian tertiary hospitals.
