Abstract

ABSTRACT The kidney is a vital organ that plays a crucial role in maintaining the body homeostasis, regulating blood pressure, and filtering waste products from the blood. Restraint stress is a widely used experimental model in physiological and psychological research to study the effects of stress on animals. Cadmium chloride is a white crystalline compound with the formula CdCl2, it has a high solubility in water and slight solubility in alcohol. Studies have shown that chronic exposure to cadmium chloride had a detrimental effect on various body systems. This study aimed to assess the renal inflammatory response of female Wistar rats exposed to chronic restraint stress and oral cadmium chloride administration. Twenty- eight female Wistar rats were divided into four (4) with seven rats in each group: (i) Control (CTL) (ii) Restraint stress alone (RSS) (iii) Cadmium alone (CCC) (iv) Restraint stress + Cadmium (RSC). The experimental group were exposed to restraint stress using wire mesh for 30 mins daily and inoculated orally with cadmium chloride (0.05 X weight) for two weeks in respect to their group. The body and kidney weight were measured, histological examination and biochemical assays of all rats were conducted. Results showed that chronic stress exposure and cadmium chloride administration for fourteen (14) days each independently decreased the body and kidney weight significantly (p
