Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study investigated the occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria isolated from fermented locust bean obtained from selected markets in Ibadan metropolis. Two varieties of freshly fermented locust bean condiments (iruworo and irupete) were aseptically collected from three different (Bodija, Sango and Apete) markets in Ibadan. Isolation of bacteria was done using standard method. Antibiotic susceptibility of the bacteria was carried out.The result of microbial count obtained ranges from; Boidjamarket(9.60 x 103 to 1.60 x 1011) Sango market (1.20 x 104 to 1.20x 1011), Apete market (1.40 x 104 to 4.00 x 1011).Thirty (30)organisms were isolates from all the sample and characterized. The thirty (30) isolates were tested on Amoxicillin, Levofloxacin, Ampiclox, Zinnacef, Gentamycin, Ciprofloxacin, Streptomycin, Septrin, Rocephin erythromycin and Pefloxacin. Most of the bacteria isolates were susceptible to the antibiotics, only Staphylococcus sciuriand Proteus mirabalis has high resistance to all the antibiotics.Such high-level of resistance depicted in the study is worrisome and calls for adequate monitoring and tracking of emerging and resistant foodborne bacteria.
