ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS OF CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS ON PROCUREMENT OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS IN ABUJA

This research assesses the environmental awareness of construction professionals in Abuja, Nigeria regarding the procurement of sustainable construction materials. The study aims to identify levels of awareness, attitudes, challenges, and strategies related to sustainable material procurement. A quantitative approach was used, involving the administration of questionnaires to 86 construction professionals, including architects, builders, quantity surveyors, and engineers. The key findings reveal a high level of general awareness about sustainable materials (mean item score 3.78 out of 5), with a focus on the importance of education and information dissemination. Professionals exhibit positive attitudes towards sustainability, although concerns about higher initial costs and resistance to change are evident. Major challenges identified include financial barriers, regulatory issues, and lack of awareness. Life Cycle Assessment emerged as the most important strategy for selecting sustainable materials. In conclusion, while there is existing awareness and positive attitudes, significant barriers hinder the widespread adoption of sustainable materials. Recommendations include the development of comprehensive educational programs, advocacy for supportive government policies, and promotion of tools like Life Cycle Assessment. This research contributes to understanding the current state of sustainable material procurement in Abuja's construction industry and provides insights for improving the adoption of environmentally responsible practices.
