ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the proximate composition and phytochemical analysis of African Elemi
(Canarium schweinfurthii). Using standard analytical methods, the result of proximate analysis for,
sample A shows that moisture, ash, lipid, protein, fiber and carbohydrate contents were 7.45%,
8.40%, 24.61%, 15.23%, 3.56% and 44.36% respectively, sample B shows that moisture, ash, lipid,
protein, fiber and carbohydrate contents were 7.50%, 8.55%, 24.34%, 15.20%, 3.45% and 44.41%
respectively and sample B shows that moisture, ash, lipid, protein, fiber and carbohydrate contents
were 7.50%, 8.50%, 24.40%, 15.25%, 3.50% and 44.45% respectively. Phytochemical analysis
revealed the presence of alkaloids, free hydroxyl-anthraquinones, free anthroquinones, cardiac
glycoside, glycosides, flavonoids, phlobatannins, reducing sugar, saponins, sterols, tannins and
