COMPOSITION AND ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY PATTERN OF PREPUTIAL BACTERIA IN CATS WITIN MAIDUGURI, NORTH EASTERN, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study is aimed at determining the composition of preputial bacteria, and to determine their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Forty (40) preputial swabs were collected from different location within Maiduguri, Borno state. The samples were cultured and identified using standard bacteriological technique. Seven bacterial species were isolated, which include Bacillus spp and Staphylococcus spp (gram negative) and Enterobacter spp, Klebsiella spp, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp and Proteus spp (gram positive). Antimicrobial sensitivity test showed that Bacillus spp were found to be resistant to one Zinnacef but sensitive to six antibiotics namely ampiclox, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, Pefloxacin and septrin. Salmonella spp is resistant to six antibiotics (augmentin, amoxycillin, gentamycin, septrin, sparfloxacin and streptomycin) and sensitive to (ciprofloxacin, Pefloxacin and tarivid). Shigella spp is resistant to two antibiotics (augmetin and gentamycin) and found to be sensitive to (ciprofloxacin Pefloxacin and septrin). Klebsiella spp is resistant four antibiotics (augmetin, amoxycillin, chloramphenicol and gentamycin) and sensitive to five antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, Pefloxacin, septrin, sparfloxacin and tarivid). Staphlococcus spp one (Zinacef) and sensitive to seven antibiotics (amoxicillin, ampiclox, ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, Pefloxacin, septrin and streptomycin). Proteus spp four (augmetin, amoxycillin, chloramphenicol and gentamycin) and found to be sensitive to three antibiotics (Pefloxacin, septrin and tarivid). Enterobacter spp is resistant to six antibiotics (augmetin, amoxycillin, pefloxacin, sparfloxacin streptomycin and tarivid) and sensitive to only one antibiotic (septrin). In conclusion, these results showed that bacteria isolated from prepuce of apparently healthy cats were observed as multi-antibiotics resistant they were found, except, for Bacillus spp and Staphylococcus spp having one antimicrobial resistance.
