APPLICATION OF ICT IN ACADEMIC LIBRARY (A CASE STUDY AL-QALAM UNIVERSITY KATSINA)

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is Application of ICT in Academic Library. The study focuses on the application of information and communication technology ICT in academic libraries that is Al-Qalam University, Katsina Library as a case study. Therefore, the researcher is limited to that library only. The research design adopted for this study is survey research. This found appropriate because, the study focused on a population of diverse community. The following are methods employed in the data collection tor the study thus; questionnaire as one of the instrument utilized for the study were administered randomly to library staffs and library users. The researcher used questionnaire as method of data collection the questionnaire contains close ended questions. In this research, population refers to group of people from which data obtained. The population of this study comprise of 30 library staff include and non-academic staffs and 205 library users from the unit/section of Al-Qalam University, Katsina Library. appropriate sample size would be to obtain at least 50% of the total population understudy as sample size. Therefore, the sample size will be 117 (50% of the total population of the Al-Qalam University, Katsina Library as sample of the study which will represent the whole population. The sampling technique is a method of selecting sample from the population and in this research work randomly sampling method selected and used in this case. The random sampling will be used in selecting the subject of the research. Air conditioning facilities and fans should be put in order to aid conservation and preservation of library materials. Enough staff should be provided and trained in the field of librarianship in order to know how they are going to handle their patrons well. They should have some technical knowhow of the job with up to date use of information medias (computers, internet etc). Since finance is the backbone of any institution and library, Al-Qalam University, Katsina Library should be well funded. Therefore, there should be an annual budget by the institution and an effective method of adhering to it. The institution should also source for other source of income such as photocopying, lamination, binding services etc. The accommodation size of the library is not only very small but inadequate; the library building should be expanded to provide more space for the use.
