SOME EFFECTS OF COCODAMOL ADMINISTRATION AND WITHDRAWAL ON DUODENUM OF MALE WISTER RAT
Abstract
Cocodamol is an opioid drug usually prescribed for managing moderate to chronic pain. It contains two major ingredients, paracetamol (acetaminophen) and codeine. This study aimed to investigate some effects of cocodamol administration and withdrawal on duodenum of male wister rat.
Twenty (20) male wistar rats with an average body weight of about 100g were randomly assigned into 4 groups of A, B, C and D, each group containing 5 animals and were fed with rat feed and water ad libitum. Group A served as the control, group B were administered cocodamol (10mg/kg body weight of codeine and 625mg/kg body weight of paracetamol) orally for two weeks and Group C received cocodamol (20mg/kg body weight of codeine and 1250mg/kg body weight of paracetamol) orally for two weeks while Group D were given cocodamol (20mg/kg body weight of codeine and 1250mg/kg body weight of paracetamol) orally for two weeks followed by a week of withdrawal of administration. The experimental animals were weighed weekly and sacrificed by cervical dislocation after two weeks. The duodenal tissues were preserved for histological studies using Haematoxylin and Eosin. The results of the weight data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a p-value of
