Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between motivation and workers’ performance in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. Recognizing motivation as a key driver of employee productivity, the research examines both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors and how they influence task efficiency, punctuality, commitment, and service delivery among local government employees. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative data through structured questionnaires administered to a representative sample of council staff and qualitative insights from in-depth interviews with department heads and selected workers. Descriptive and inferential statistics (including correlation and regression analyses) were used to test hypotheses, while thematic analysis was applied to interview data. Findings indicate a positive and statistically significant correlation between motivation and workers’ performance. Extrinsic factors—such as timely remuneration, allowances, and improved working conditionsThe study concludes that enhancing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational mechanisms is essential for improving workforce performance in Oredo LGA. Recommendations include instituting reliable payroll practices, establishing transparent performance-based incentives, strengthening staff training programs, and creating non-monetary recognition schemes to foster long-term commitment and service quality.
