EFFECT OF LIVELIHOOD DIVERSIFICATION ON POVERTY STATUS OF RURAL HOUSEHOLDS IN SURULERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OGBOMOSO, OYO STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The research explores how livelihood diversification affects the poverty levels of rural households in Surulere local government area, Ogbomoso, Nigeria. With rural communities facing persistent economic pressures, it is important to assess whether engaging in multiple income-generating activities can mitigate poverty. Data were collected through household surveys and discussions with key stakeholders in the community. The results indicate that households that diversify their income sources—through activities such as farming, trading, and craftwork—tend to have better economic stability compared to those relying on a single source. The study identifies factors like education, market access, and community networks as critical to the success of livelihood diversification. The findings suggest that supporting diverse economic activities could be a practical approach to reducing poverty and enhancing the sustainability of rural livelihoods. Policy interventions aimed at fostering such diversification are also considered.
