AMELIORATIVE EFFECT OF SENNA OCCIDENTALIS AND ARTEMISIA ANNUA ON THE HISTOLOGY OF THE CEREBELLUM FOLLOWING ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETES IN WISTAR RAT

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, which leads to various complications, including neurodegenerative effects on the central nervous system. The cerebellum, crucial for motor coordination, is particularly vulnerable to damage under diabetic conditions. This study investigates the ameliorative effects of Senna occidentalis and artemisia annua on cerebellar dysfunction in Alloxan-induced diabetics in wistar rat. Twenty Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n=4 per group): Control (non-diabetic), Negative control (diabetic untreated), Diabetic treated with Senna occidentalis, Diabetic treated with Artemisia, and Diabetic treated with Combination of Artemisia and Senna Occidentalis, Diabetes was induced intraperitoneally using alloxan at a dose of 150 mg/kg. Blood glucose levels and body weights were monitored to confirm diabetes and assess treatment efficacy. Treatment with Senna occidentalis and Artemisia annua administered daily at a specific dose (200mg/kg) for two weeks. Motor coordination was evaluated using walking beam Test, and the cerebellum was examined histologically for structural changes. Results findings indicate that alloxan-induced diabetes significantly impaired motor coordination, reduced body weight, and elevated fasting blood glucose levels. Treatment with Senna occidentalis improved motor function, reduced hyperglycemia, and mitigated cerebellar structural damage. Histological analysis revealed reduced neuronal degeneration and improved cerebellar architecture in the treated group compared to the diabetic untreated group.
