Abstract

Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and other organic substances, is a common environmental contaminant that is released into the environment via natural seepage, oil spills, and industrial processes. Because of the toxicological effects of crude oil on a variety of biological systems, including the female reproductive system, its extensive usage and transportation raise serious implications for public health and the environment. The reproductive organs of females, including the ovary, are very susceptible to the deleterious consequences of exposure to crude oil due to their complex cellular architecture, high metabolic activity, and rich lipid content. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Crude Oil on Ovary. Twenty Female Wistar rats weighing 120 ± 30g were randomly assigned into four experimental groups, including the crude oil-exposed Group which are Group B, Group C, and Group D and Group A being the control group, 5 female rats in each group. Crude oil was administered to the experimental group via oropharyngeal means, For group B: 0.2ml of crude oil was administered to them, For group C: 0.4ml of Crude oil was administered to them, For Group D: 0.6ml of crude oil was administered to them, While the control Croup was not administered at all. Administration of crude oil started on 2nd of May, 2024 - 4th of June, 2024, the crude oil was administered to the exposed group for 33 days. The animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the Ovary harvested retroperitoneally and fixed for histological studies. Body and organ weight were taken and results analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The photomicrographs of the ovaries of female wistar rats in control group (Group A), exhibited intact organization and structure of the ovary, increased number of ovarian follicles, intact organization of nucleus (NU), Oocyte(O) and Zonapellucida(ZP) as well as intact organization of hemorrhoid/fibrosis(H/F) .This serves as a baseline for comparison with the other groups. The photomicrographs of Group B, C and D shows Primordial follicle(PF), Germinal epithelium(GE) and Cortical stroma(CS) with atrophied ovarian cells, some wasted follicle and highly disorganized follicles, severe degenerative changes as well as some mild fibrosis and inflammation were observed in the ovary, suggesting potential pathological changes compared to control group
