THE NEEDS AND IMPORTANCE OF IMPROVISING LOCAL MATERIALS AS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF YORUBA LANGUAGE IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ONDO EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ONDO STATE

This study was carried out to investigate the the needs and importance of improvising local materials as instructional materlals in the teaching and learning of Yoruba language in selected secondury schools in Ondó East Local Government Area of Ondo State. Descriptive survey design was used for the study and a sample ofone hundred (100) respondents was selected through the simple random sampling technique from five secondary schools in Ondo East Local Government Area of Ondo State. Frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the data collected. The result showed among other findings that improper and înadequate use ofsuitable locally improvised materials in teaching and learning of Yoruha will not bring learning result. For teachers and studenls to achieve learning outcome. it is inevitable for teachers ofYoruba to make use ofappropriate leaching uids to motivate and sustain srudents' altention. It was therefore recommended among others that teachers of Yoruba language should endeavour to make use oflocally improvised materials when the original object cannot be found. Government should provide improvised local materials to Yoruba leachers to aid effective teaching and learning of Yoruba language in secondary schools. The school management should provide the enabling environment for the leaching and learning Yoruba. The stakeholders or education (Ministry of Education) should make it an obligation for Yoruba teachers to use instructional aids under their regular supervision. The home should assist their children with necessary materials in Yoruba language. The students should create interest in learning Yoruba as a subject in school. School authorities should address the perceived inadequacies in the resource center,ensuring that students have access to the necessary tools and materials for their education.
