TLC PROFILING OF THE CHEMICAL COMPONENT OF CURCUMA ZEDOARIA
Abstract
TLC profiling of the chemical component of Curcuma zedoaria was carried out using ethanolic extract method. The analysis revealed the presence of various compounds. TLC profiling using various spraying reagents indicated the presence of specific organic compounds. H2SO4 reagent with Rf value of 0.16, 0.58, 0.83, 0.29, 0.33 and 0.66 produced black and pink colour spots indicating the presence of phenolics and flavonoids. KMnO4 reagent produced a pale yellow with Rf value of 0.69, 0.77, 0.77,0.88 and 0.88 indicating the presence a of unsaturated aldehyde compounds such as safranal compound. Ferric chloride reagent with Rf value of 0.08, 0.13, 0.16, and 0.77 produced a blue black colour, indicating the presence of phenols, flavonoids and tannins compounds. 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine spraying reagent with Rf value of 0.18, 0.24, 0.52, 0.63, 0.69, 0.82 and 0.90 produced a yellow colour spots, indicating the presence of saponins and aldehydes compounds. Vanillin sulfuric acid spraying reagent produced black and yellow color spots with Rf of 0.75, 0.60, 0.69, 0.18, 0.93, 0.84, indicating the presence of phenolics compounds. Thus, the result of this study provide valuable information on the chemical components of Curcuma zedoaria.
