EFFECT OF SOCIAL ECONOMIC STATUS ON THE ENROLLMENT OF STUDENTS INTO HIGHER INSTITUTION.A CASE STUDY OF ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION,ONDO

A mix of the economic and social position of an individual or family in connection to others based on income, educational level and occupation simply known as socio-economic status.Therefore,the study sought to investigate the effect ofsocio-economic status on the enrollment of students into higher institution, using Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo as a case study. The purpose of the study is examine the effect of parents socio-economics state on the academic line of students;whether parental socio-economic status have the same influence on the academic line of students and influence of parental socio-economic status on the academic line of students in developed and developing areas. Therefore, three research questions was formulated while two research hypothesis was also formulated to tackle theproblems of the study. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Entire students of Adeyemi College of Education were considered as the population of the study. 100 students were randomly selected. Structured questionnaire were used as research instrument. Data gathered were analysed using frequency counts, mean and standard deviation for research questions while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze research hypotheses. Based on the findings, analysis in research hypothesis 1 findings revealed that, it appears that parental socio-economic status does not exert a substantial influence on students' enrollment into tertiary institutions, as the p-value exceeds the standard alpha level of significance, suggesting a lack of statistical significance in this relationship and the analysis in research hypothesis 2, it seems that there is no significant discrepancy in enrollment rates into higher institutions between students in developed and developing areas,as the p-value exceeds the conventional threshold for statistical significance. Based on findings of this study the study therefore recommended that parents should be trained on income generating activities that can make them financially stable so as to support the education of their children; the government should subsidize tertiary education moreso make it more affordable.
