Abstract

Soybean is an important economic leguminous crop which can fix atmospheric nitrogen and contributes to meeting nitrogen needs in agriculture. This study assessed soybean genotype with high N-fixation capabilities. The study was conducted at Teaching and Research Farm, Ajayi Crowther University, Faculty of Agriculture, Oyo, Nigeria, from 22nd of July to 18th of September 2024. The experiment was carried out using five varieties of intermediate maturing soybean genotypes (TGx_24_42NG_0095, TGx_24_41NG_0092, TGx_24_49NG_0152, TGx_24_43NG_0124 and TGx_24_43NG_0119) replicated twice and was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data collected on plant height (PH), number of leaves (NL), number of nodules (NN), number of branches (NB), nodules dry weight (NDW), shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW) and N-fixed were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and variety means were compared using LSD at 0.05 significant level. The result shows that N-fixed by soybean genotypes does not significantly influence intermediate soybean genotypes. However, TGx_24_49NG_0152 had the highest percentage of N-fixed (32%) while TGx_24_42NG_0095 has the lowest percentage of N-fixed (12%). Soybean growth parameters are not significantly influenced. However, TGx_24_42NG_0095 produced the tallest plant (72.18) while TGx_24_43NG_0119 produced the shortest plant (59.73) where TGx_24_49NG_0152 had the highest leaf count (81.2) and highest branch number (30.4) while TGx_24_42NG_0095 had the lowest leaf count (57.6) and lowest branch number (19.2). In contrast, number of nodules does not have significant influence on soybean genotypes, However TGx_24_43NG_0119 had the highest nodule count (20%), highest nodule dry weight (0.096), lowest shoot dry weight (16.368), lowest root dry weight (1.56) while TGx_24_49NG_0152["produced lowest nodule count (12%),lowest nodule dry weight (0.042),highest shoot dry weight\n(30.706),highest root dry weight (3.061).\nIn conclusion, soybean genotypes did not exhibit significantly different growth parametersand that genotypes had no significant influence on nitrogen fixation
