GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND FEED CONVERSION RATIO (FCR) OF AFRICAN MUD CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS) IN REINFORCED PLASTIC FISH REARING TANK
Abstract
A four (4) weeks study was conducted to determine the growth performance and feed
conversion ratio of African Mud catfish (Clarias gariepinus) juveniles of average initial
weight (6.0±0.03g) in reinforcedr plastic rearing tanks. One plastic reinforced culture
tanks of 1000 litres capacity. The fish were fed 45% CP floating pellets at 6% body
weight twice daily throughout the study period. Weight gain, percentage weight gain,
feed conversion ratio, were used to determine growth performance. Water quality
parameters like temperature (26.75 ±0.63°C), pH(7.6 ±0.17), dissolved oxygen (7.6
±0.17 mg/l) and turbidity (32 ± 0.43cm) recorded were found to support optimum growth.
However, high weight gain was obtained in reinforced plastic tanks. The feed conversion
ratio of 1.07 was recorded, and this shows that fish produced in this culture system have
moderately converted the feed consumed into flesh. Similarly, the reinforced fish tanks
were found to support fish feed efficient utilization for better growth performance.
