HAEMATOLOGY OF WEST AFRICA DWARF SHEEP FED MAIZE STOVER ENSILED WITH GMELINA ARBOREA AND CASSAVA PEEL
Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the haematology of twenty West African Dwarf (WAD) Sheep fed diets contained maize stover (MS) ensiled with Gmelina arborea and cassava peel after fifteen weeks of feeding trial. The five tested diets were: A: 60% MS + 40% GAL, B: 60% MS+30% GAL+ 10% cassava peel, C: 60% MS +20% GAL +20% cassava peel, D: 60% MS + 10% GAL + 30% cassava peel, E: 60% MS + 40% cassava peel. The sheep were divided into five groups of four animals each. Each group of sheep was randomly allocated to one of the experimental diets in 105 days of feeding trials. Blood samples were collected at the end of 15 weeks of feeding trial for haematological analysis. The results obtained showed that neutrophil (NEU), lymphocyte (LYM) and basophil (BAS) in the blood did not differ significantly (P>0.05) between the dietary treatments. There was significant (P0.05) except diet C and E which are also similar between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet C (13.75pg/cell). However, there was no significance (P>0.05) differences in mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) except in diet E (15.60%) between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet E (15.60%). There were significant (P0.05) influenced by the treatments. Ther were not significant different (P>0.05) white blood cell (WBC) except in diet B (6.00wbc/mcL) between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet A (9.40 wbc/mcL). There were not significant (P>0.05) differences in neutrophil (NEU) between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet A (36.00NEU/μL) with the same value in diet A and C. There were not significant (P>0.05) differences in lymphocyte (LYM) between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet A and C with the same value in diet B and D (61.00µL). There were not significant (P>0.05) differences in eosinophil (EOS) between dietary treatments except diet A and C which are also similar such that it was highest in diet A (4.50cell/uL). There were not Significant (P>0.05) differences in monocvte (MON) between dietary treatments except diet C and D such that it was highest in diet B (7.00um). There were not significant (P>0.05) differences in basophil (BAS) between dietary treatments such that it was highest in diet E (4.00x 10/uL).
