PRODUCTION OF BATTERY GRADE LITHIUM CARBONATE FROM NIGERIAN LITHIUM ORE VIA BENEFICIATION AND EXTRACTION

Abstract

Processing of spodumene concentrate from the Endo deposits in Nassarawa state for production of high-purity battery grade Li₂CO₃ has been studied. XRD and SEM examination confirmed that the sample is a spodumene, containing majorly quartz as impurity. Processing of the spodumene involved calcining the ore at 900℃, roasting the pre-heated concentrate with concentrated HCL followed by water leaching of the resulting Li2SO4; solution purification and precipitation of Li2CO3. The effect of roasting temperature, calcination temperature, Acid to sample ratio and leaching temperature are reported. Lithium carbonate was produced with a purity of 85.20% and was characterized using XRD and Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS).
