MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AS DETERMINANT OF UNILORIN TEAMS PERFORMANCE AT NIGERIA UNIVERSITIES GAMES ASSOCIATION

This study examined the management strategies as determinant to the performance of Unilorin teams at Nigeria Universities Games Association. A descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population for this study comprised of the administrators, coaches, athletes of Unilorin in Ilorin, Kwara state. Two hundred respondents were selected through a stratified random sample for the study from Unilorin teams in Ilorin, Kwara State. The instrument used for data collection for the study was a researcher designed questionnaire, which was validated by experts in Human Kinetics Education. The reliability of the instrument was confirmed through a test-retest procedure, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.79. Data analysis involved the use of both descriptive statistics (frequency counts and percentages) for demographic information, and inferential statistics of ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 alpha level of significance. Findings revealed significant positive relationships between all management strategies and Unilorin teams’ performance. The study concluded that management strategies influence the performance of Unilorin teams in Nigeria Universities Games Association through structured leadership style, training and development, planning & strategy, motivation, and monitoring & performance. It recommended that the school management should actively promote the use of these leadership styles by the sports management to ensure performance, multiple training and development programs must be incorporated into the Unilorin teams schedule to increase performance, and constant monitoring and evaluation of Unilorin teams should be a regular practise of the sports management at Nuga games to ensure optimum performance.
