IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON ENVIRONMENT POLICIES IN NIGERIA ( A CASE STUDY OF ADAMAWA STATE)
Abstract
Climate change poses significant challenges to environmental policies in Nigeria, impacting various sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health, and biodiversity. This paper examines the complex interplay between climate change and environmental policies, focusing on Hong. The impact of climate change on Nigeria's environment is evident in rising temperatures, changing rainfal patterns, increased frequency of extreme weather events. hese changes have far-reaching consequences, including reduced agricultural productivity, water scarcity, food insecurity, loss of biodiversity, and heightened risks of disease outbreaks. In response to these challenges, Hong has developed environmental policies and strategies aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change. These include the National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action on Climate Change for Nigeria (NASPA-CCN), the National Policy on Climate Change, and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. However, despite these policy efforts, there are implementation gaps and challenges. Limited funding, institutional capacity constraints, inadequate data and research, and socio-economic factors hinder the effective implementation of environmental policies. Additionally, coordination among stakeholders at the national, state, and local levels remains a challenge. This paper recommends holistic approaches to addressing the impact of climate change on environmental policies in Nigeria. These include enhancing climate resilience in key sectors, promoting sustainable land and water management practices, investing in climate-smart agriculture, strengthening institutional capacity, improving data collection and analysis, and fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships for effective policy implementation.
