A PRAGMA-STYLISTICS ANALYSIS OF SELECTED PROVERBS IN FEMI ADEBAYO’S JAGUN JAGUN
Abstract
This study examines the pragma-stylistic tools employed in Femi Adebayo's movie "Jagun Jagun", focusing on the contextual features and language variations that contribute to meaning generation. Using a qualitative approach and Mey's (2001) Pragmatic Act Theory, the research analyses ten (10) selected extracts from the movie. The findings revealed that language plays an important role in the entertainment purpose of movies, with linguistic items carefully chosen to achieve desired goals. The study identifies various pragmatic tools, including metaphors, implicature, and speech acts, which contribute to the meaning-making process. The research demonstrates that language is situated and context-dependent, and that metaphors are pervasively used to create new expressions and convey ideas. The study concludes that Femi Adebayo's use of linguistic resources, including metaphors and other pragma-stylistic tools, significantly enhances the entertainment value of his work.
