GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND SURVIVAL RATE OF AFRICAN MUD CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS) IN REINFORCED REINFORCED PLASTIC FISH REARING TANKS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
A four (4) weeks study was conducted to determine the growth performance and survival rate of African Mud catfish (Clarias gariepinus) juveniles of average initial weight (6.0±0.03g) in reinforced plastic rearing tanks. One plastic reinforced culture tanks of 1000L was used. The fish were fed 45% CP floating pellets at 6% body weight twice daily throughout the study period. Weight gains, percentage weight gain, survival rate, were used to determine growth performance. Water quality parameters like temperature (26.75 ±0.63°C), pH(7.6 ±0.17), dissolved oxygen (7.6 ±0.17 mg/l) and turbidity (32 ± 0.43cm) recorded were found to support optimum growth. The survival rate of 92% was recorded at the end of the four (4) weeks close study of growth performance of African mud catfish in a reinforced fish plastic rearing tanks. Finally, the reinforced fish tanks were found to support optimum fish growth performance. It was therefore recommended for fish pond culture.
