EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON FERTILITY HORMONES; FOLLICE STIMULATING HORMONE AND TESTOSTERONE ON MALE CHRONIC ALCOHOLICS IN MADONNA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, ELELE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
chronic consumption of alcohol is associated with a risk of developing health problems such as sexual problems and infertility.Excessiveconsumption of alcohol affects fertility in many ways. The study was done to evaluate the effect of alcohol on follicle stimulating hormones and testosterone on male chronic alcoholics. Informed consent of the subject was obtained and ethical approval was gotten from ethical committee of Madonna University teaching hospital Elele, Rivers state. A total of 40 subjects were used, which comprised of 25 subjects and 15 controls within the age limit of 20-55. Blood sample were collected and analyzed for follicle stimulating hormones and testosterone using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method. Statistical analysis was done using statistical package for social science version 21 for window 10. Value p>0.05 were considered to be significant. There is significant increase (0.00) in serum concentration of FSH (mIU/ml) in test group (7.4470 ± 2.0419) when compare with the control group (4.6998 ± 1.2538).The result also shows that there is significant decrease (0.00) in serum concentration of testosterone (ng/ml) in test group (4.0114 ± 0.4797) when compare with the control group (5.2298 ± 0.8221).The study concludes that alcohol has effect on fertility hormones by increasing the serum level of follicle stimulating hormones and decreasing the serum level of testosterone. Due to the decreased in serum concentration of testosterone in chronic alcoholics, the pituitary feedback regulation is altered. The FSH concentration in serum is increased because of the loss of seminiferous tubular function in chronic alcoholics. Further research should be carried out on effect on alcohol on others fertility hormones: oestrogen and prolactin on female chronic alcoholics.
