Abstract

The study discusses the assessment of Leaked X-ray Radiation Around Two Hospital facilities in Ogbomoso. Five rooms each (Control Area Room one (R1), Room Two (R2), Toilet, Control Area, Patient Waiting Area (PWA), First Office (FO), changing room ) were chosen as the point of investigation in the two diagnostics health centre. According to International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the standard permissible limit should not exceed 1 mSv per single year. The radiation alert monitor was used to measure the equivalent dose rate in both diagnostics centre. In LAUTECH Health Centre, the overall annual effective dose calculated that 10% of the estimated value were above the recommended reference dose level of 1 mSv/yr. In LAUTECH HEALTH the mean annual effective dose is greater than the permissible limit because of high presence of radiation in the X-ray room, hence, it may not be radiologically safe. It was calculated that 20% of the estimated value of annual effective dose in Mainspring Diagnostics Centre were above the recommended reference dose level of 1 mSv/yr. Also, in Mainspring Hospital Room 3 the mean annual effective dose is greater than the permissible limit because of high presence of radiation due to the fact that Room 3 is sharing wall directly with the X-ray room, hence, it may not be radiologically safe. Although readings acquired in this room were still within the dose range exposure, however, it could be significant because the study was carried out when only commonly procedure is carried out. Hence, it is expected to be higher than this when advanced X-ray procedure such as treatment of infertility, cancer, tumour, kidney stone etc.
