INVESTIGATION INTO THE PHYSICO CHEMICAL AND MICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF BOREHOLE IN OGWASHI-UKU, DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study evaluates the water quality of four borehole samples (A, B, C, and D) from four different sources. The results obtained reveal that pH levels of all samples fall within the acceptable range (6.5-8.5) but significant change exist in other parameters. Conductivity levels exceed the maximum allowable limit (0.1-0.3mS/cm) in Sample D, Dissolved oxygen levels are remarkably high in all samples, with Sample D (47.6mg/l) showing exceptionally high levels. Calcium and magnesium levels are below the desirable limits (50-100 mg/l and 0.2 mg/l) in Samples A, B, and C. Total suspended solids levels are low in all samples, except for Sample B (2.4mg/l) which shows relatively high levels, potentially. Total dissolved solids levels are high in Samples A (1.0mg/l) and B (1.0mg/l), moderate in Sample C (0.8mg/l), and low in Sample D (0.2mg/l). Most concerning, however, is the detection of total coliform bacteria in all samples, exceeding the recommended limit (0 CFU/100) which indicates contamination and potential health risks.
