Abstract

Anthropometry, as an early tool of physical anthropology; has been used for identification, for the purpose of understanding human physical variation, in paleo anthropology and in various attempts to correlate physical with racial and psychological traits. This study is an attempt to determine sex and stature using foot anthropometric variables among adult student of medical college Yobe state University, Damaturu. One hundred and fifty (150) males and one hundred and fifty (150) females making three hundred (300) adults student were sampled using simple random sampling technique. The parameters were measured using a stadiometer, measuring ruler, and venier caliper. The results revealed that male foot length, height, weight and foot breadth were significantly higher than their female counterparts. Regarding the foot shape, proportion of broad foot was higher among the males; however, the slender and standard foot types were higher among the females. The anthropometric data provided serves as a template for the Yobe state University students on whom the study was carried out, and confirms that there is a geographical and sexual difference in anthropometric parameters, therefore should be considered in forensic investigations. In all these correlations used, all the parameters showed significant relationship in both genders, but with higher values in the males than the females.
