Abstract

ABSTRACT This project explores the mechanical and physical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with periwinkle and coconut shells, aiming to provide sustainable, cost-effective materials for engineering applications. Given the environmental and health concerns associated with synthetic fillers, natural reinforcements offer a promising alternative. Composites were developed with varying reinforcement ratios and subjected to tests for tensile strength, compressive strength, wear resistance, density, impact strength, hardness strength and water absorption properties. Results revealed that shell reinforcements significantly improved the composite's strength and durability, particularly at optimal reinforcement levels, demonstrating properties comparable to traditional asbestos-based materials used in brake pads. The findings underscore the potential of utilizing agricultural waste materials to create eco-friendly composites for the automotive industry, contributing to both economic and environmental sustainability.
