THE IMPACT OF POVERTY AND INSECURITY ON SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF BURUKU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BENUE STATE FROM 2015-2024
Abstract
It is an indisputable fact that the problems of developing countries are many, and these include poverty, insecurity, hunger, kidnapping, corruption, diseases, and bad governance. However, poverty remains the major problem that has placed Nigeria among the lowest income earners in the world. Poverty and insecurity are also persistent challenges with negative consequences in all sectors of Nigerian society. This research was therefore an attempt to unravel the correlation between poverty and insecurity on sustainable economic development in Nigeria with particular reference to Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State from 2015 to 2024. To execute the study, the research employed a descriptive research design through the sample survey method. It also adopted the political economy theory to analyze the subject matter. The research population was centered on the people of Buruku Local Government Area and its environs. Both primary and secondary sources of data were utilized, which included libraries, internet resources, and questionnaires. The findings of the study revealed a strong and negative connection between poverty, insecurity, and sustainable economic development in Buruku LGA. The study therefore recommended, among others, that government should endeavour to provide good governance to the people, empower the masses, adopt stringent laws and penalties in the conduct of governance, and promote citizenship education for the purpose of improving sustainable economic growth and development in Buruku LGA, Benue State, and Nigeria at large.
