IN-VITRO INTERACTION BETWEEN CHLORPHENIRAMINE AND SOME ADSORPTIVE ANTACIDS.
Abstract
Chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM), a widely prescribed antihistamine, is frequently administered in clinical settings alongside adsorptive antacids such as Magnesium Trisilicate (Mg2O8Si2) and Aluminium Hydroxide [Al (OH)3]. Despite its common use, little attention has been given to the potential interactions between CPM and these antacids. This study seeks to elucidate the nature of these interactions through an invitro investigation, with a primary focus on evaluating alterations in CPM's solubility and stability when coexisting with MTS and AlOH.
This research employed a systematic approach, encompassing a range of concentrations and ratios of CPM, Mg2O8Si2 and Al (OH)3. State-of-the-art analytical techniques such as preparation of the solvent, equilibration and analysis were employed to assess the consequences of these interactions comprehensively.
A pronounced reduction in the solubility of CPM was perceived when the antacids were introduced into the solution. Importantly, this decrease in solubility was concentration-dependent, indicating a direct relationship between antacid concentration and the extent of solubility reduction. Additionally, it was found that the antacids compromised the stability of CPM over time. The impact on stability was more pronounced at higher concentrations of these antacids and their excess ratios.
This investigation provides valuable insights into the interaction between CPM and adsorptive antacids. Further mechanistic studies are required to elucidate the underlying processes fully. Clinical trials involving patients receiving CPM with or without these antacids are warranted to validate our inferences in real-world contexts. Ultimately, this research advances our understanding of drug-antacid interactions, contributing to enhanced patient care and pharmaceutical product development.
