ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA: STRATEGIC APPROACHES FROM OYO STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of environmental protection policies and waste management regulations in Oyo State, Nigeria. Despite the existence of national and state-level frameworks such as the NESREA Act (2007), the National Environmental (Sanitation and Waste Control) Regulations (2009), and the Oyo State Environmental Protection Agency Law (2015), waste management remains inadequate. Challenges include irregular waste collection, indiscriminate dumping, weak enforcement, insufficient funding, and poor community engagement. Using a qualitative descriptive design and secondary data analysis, the study evaluates policy implementation, enforcement mechanisms, and stakeholder roles. Findings reveal systemic weaknesses in regulatory agencies and highlight the need for integrated approaches, stronger enforcement, and enhanced public participation. The study contributes to environmental governance literature and offers practical recommendations for improving sustainable waste management in Oyo State.
