THE CHALLENGES OF FEDERALISM IN A MULTI-ETHNIC SOCIETY (A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIA)
Abstract
This research examines the challenges of federalism in Nigeria, a country characterized by significant ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. Using Nigeria as a case study, the work explores the historical evolution of federalism, the dynamics of intergovernmental relations, and the structural factors that influence the functioning of the federal system. Key issues identified include ethnic rivalry, uneven resource distribution, political interference, constitutional ambiguities, and weak institutional frameworks. The study further highlights how these challenges contribute to conflict, governance inefficiencies, and developmental disparities across regions. Through qualitative analysis and review of existing literature, the research provides insights into the persistent obstacles facing Nigerian federalism and offers recommendations for strengthening unity, promoting inclusive governance, and ensuring sustainable national development.
