INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF TEACHERS EXPERIENCE IN ENHANCING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN CHEMISTRY AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY IN KUMBOTSO LOCAL GOVERNMENT

ABSTRACTThis study was to investigate the effect of teachers experience in enhancing academic performance in chemistry among senior secondary in Kumbotso local government. The study used three objectives and had answered three research question drawn from the objectives. The descriptive research design was adopted in thus study. The population of the study consisted of all chemistry teachers in public senior secondary schools in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. The population comprised 25 chemistry teachers who are currently in the senior secondary schools in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. The sample for the study consists of 19 chemistry teachers in public secondary schools in Kumbotso local government area of Kano state. The sample was selected using simple random technique where each and every member of the population is given equal and independent chance of being selected. The instruments used to collect data from the study were questionnaire. Quantitative data was coded tallied and analyzed using descriptive statistics frequency and percentage was used in analyzing the demographic data, while mean and standard deviation was used in analyzing research questions data. Pearson product moment Correlation analysis was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis was done through computerized package of SPSS software version 20. The findings of the study revealed that, there is some relationship between teachers' years of experience and students' performance in chemistry The findings also revealed that teachers' experience approaches can impact students' understanding of chemistry concepts. It was found in this study that there are some perceptions of students, teachers, and school administrators regarding the importance of teacher experience in teaching chemistry. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between the use of specific strategies by teachers and student academic performance. Teachers with more years of experience should be motivated to stay in their jobs so as to gate student performance in chemistry. This research recommended that Workshops, seminar, in-service, refresher courses, exhibition, scholarship and other means whereby Chemistry teachers can learn should be granted to impact students' understanding of chemistry concepts. Internal inspection to be strengthened in schools. This will help strengthen teacher preparation and improve delivery of perceptions of students, teachers, and school administrators regarding the importance of teacher experience in teaching chemistry. Government should be motivate teachers to boost their relationship between the use of specific strategies and student academic performance by providing them with necessary incentives such as adequate salaries, excellent work environment and other fringe benefits that compare favorably with what their counterparts in other professions receives
