FLUORIDE INVESTIGATION IN GROUNDWATER OF GWANGE ONE, MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigates the concentration of fluoride and other physicochemical parameters in groundwater within Gwange One, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria. Twenty groundwater samples were collected from boreholes and hand pumps across the study area. Field measurements of pH, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS) were carried out on-site, while fluoride concentration was determined in the laboratory using a SMART spectrophotometer. Results indicate that fluoride concentrations range from 0.10 to 0.40 mg/L, which is below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended optimal range for drinking water. Although the groundwater is generally suitable for domestic use, low fluoride levels may predispose residents to dental caries. The study highlights the need for continuous groundwater quality monitoring and appropriate water treatment strategies to ensure public health safety.
